The Deseret alphabet, created in the 1850s by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a phonetic writing system designed to simplify English spelling. Led by Brigham Young and developed by George D. Watt, it aimed to aid children and immigrants in learning to read and write. Each symbol represented a distinct sound, addressing the inconsistencies of standard English spelling. However, its use declined after the 1870s due to implementation challenges and assimilation, with only a few books published.
